Hurricane Helene: Long-Term Recovery Efforts
Supporting communities across the South East as they rebuild after Hurricane Helene.

Situation Overview
Hurricane Helene made landfall on September 26, 2024, along Florida’s Big Bend as a Category 4 storm before moving inland through Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Virginia. While coastal impacts were severe, record-setting rainfall caused catastrophic inland flooding, particularly across Western North Carolina and the Appalachian region.
Rainfall exceeding 30 inches triggered river flooding, landslides, and widespread infrastructure damage, isolating rural communities and disrupting access to essential services. North Carolina alone reported over 100 confirmed fatalities, with more than one million households losing power and utilities across the Southeast.
Preliminary assessments estimate $59.6 billion in damage and unmet needs in North Carolina, with regional economic losses projected between $20–34 billion. More than a year later, many communities continue to face long-term recovery challenges related to housing, infrastructure, and access.
