08 Jun Sleep Number Helps Forgotten Survivors In East Harris County
LIVES IMPACTED: 280
The families who fall through the cracks are among the most devastating aspects in any disaster. When Hurricane Harvey brought $125 billion worth of damage to southeast Texas, it brought national and international attention. Many groups poured into Rockport, where the Hurricane touched down, and Houston, the largest metropolitan area impacted by the storm. While support in these notable areas was helpful, it was neither sustainable nor comprehensive when considering the full breadth of damage. Now that many groups have left, it is up to local organizations and companies to help those forgotten Texans rebuild. Shortly after the hurricane subsided, Sleep Number made a commitment to help survivors recover with brand new mattresses. The key to their thoughtful response was that they did not send these mattresses until the community was ready to receive them, long after media attention had turned elsewhere. A local church, Christian Tabernacle, had been simultaneously working to help residents in the unincorporated areas of East Harris County recover and rebuild. Christian Tabernacle had a large network of forgotten survivors whose belongings had been destroyed by floodwaters, in some places reaching 5 feet. One of the most expensive items which many survivors lost were mattresses. Good360 was able to bring Sleep Number and Christian Tabernacle together to provide a highly needed product at a crucial time. One of the recipients of this donation was Nick Villalobos. He and his family lost everything when their home took on 5 feet of water from Hurricane Harvey. Their recovery has been difficult, but selfless organizations like Christian Tabernacle and Good360 have helped to make it more manageable. Sleep Number’s timely donation of a mattress for his daughter will ensure that, although their recovery continues, she will rest easy every night. With partners like Sleep Number, Good360 can remain committed to long-term thoughtful giving that provides a sense of renewed possibility to families and communities impacted by disaster. Partnerships with companies such as Sleep Number are critical in helping Good360 achieve its mission to ensure that the right products are going to the right people at the right time throughout the entire disaster recovery process. Good360 is also privileged to be able to support organizations like Christian Tabernacle meeting the needs of their community long after the disaster and after the media attention has faded away.
