19 Jun PRESS RELEASE: CarMax Partners with Good360 to Support the Organization’s Disaster Recovery Efforts
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Alexandria, VA, June 19, 2019–Good360, the global leader in product philanthropy and purposeful giving, announced today that CarMax has donated $50,000 to support disaster recovery efforts. CarMax, the largest used car retailer in the United States, believes in the importance of proactively approaching a disaster plan, before the disaster strikes and on a long-term basis. The donation from CarMax will have a meaningful impact on regions recovering from a disaster. For every dollar received, Good360 can distribute a minimum of $10 in needed goods, meaning that a $50,000 grant will help provide a minimum of $500,000 in goods to disaster-impacted communities. In addition, The CarMax Foundation will match associates’ donations to Good360 2:1, effectively doubling the impact of every dollar given.
“We are grateful for CarMax, a socially responsible corporate partner who collaborates with us every day to tackle they key challenges in disaster giving,” said Howard Sherman, CEO of Good360. “Our partnership with CarMax and their long-term approach to disaster recovery allows Good360 to maximize our impact in these devastated areas for as long as we’re needed, ensuring that the right goods get to the right people at the right time during all phases of a disaster.”
CarMax has also joined the Resilient Response initiative by pledging to give thoughtfully and purposefully both during and after disaster events. The initiative, co-founded by Good360 in the fall of 2018, encourages companies to embody disaster-giving best practices to tackle key issues and to help build stronger communities that can better withstand future disasters.
Good360 embraces a holistic view of disaster recovery, from preparation and planning to early response to the long-term rebuilding of resilient communities. The organization works with local nonprofits and recovery agencies to determine the exact needs of disaster survivors and mobilizes its network of corporate partners to source critically needed goods. Historically, up to 60 percent of unsolicited goods donated during disasters end up in landfills or otherwise go to waste. Further, 70 percent of all giving happens within the first two months post-disaster, often leaving long-term recovery abandoned.
“At CarMax we put people first by helping our communities thrive and our associates share our passion for giving back,” said Leslie Parpart, Director of Community Relations. “We think it’s critical that, during a disaster, communities receive exactly what they need. We are proud to partner with Good360 to mobilize those resources.”
