As Told to Good360 by United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley

United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley, located in Salem, Oregonfocuses on supporting our friends and neighbors in need, because we all benefit when we each have an opportunity to reach our full potential. We work together with businesses, government, schools, faith groups, individual community members, and nonprofits – because it takes the whole community to get the kind of results we need. We believe it’s not enough to simply work together to tackle complex social issues but each participant must focus intently on our common goals, aligning all our time, dollars, and staff resources, and holding each other accountable so we can make the greatest difference possible. This “collective” approach has shown to improve results, and we are applying these concepts in the areas of education, homelessness, and other critical issues to ensure our community achieves greater and greater success.

This holiday season we participated in a distribution event which impacted the lives of over 200 residents, giving back wreaths and garlands in need in our community.  Originally, we wanted to decorate veterans’ graves with the garlands and wreaths for the holiday, but we had an issue with transportation and logistics.  Luckily, we connected with a contact at Salvation Army here in Salem and he was able to arrange transportation with the wonderful people at May Trucking.

They picked up the wreaths and garlands in a 53’ refrigerated truck and left the trailer there for several days so the wreaths and garlands could be distributed.  Once we connected with Dallas Cemetery and May Trucking, we decorated over 2,000 veterans tombstones over the course of the week. We had about 1800 decorations leftover and were able to distribute those to families in need through the Salvation Army Toy and Joy event.  One lady told me that she had never had a wreath before and that she was so happy with it because she could finally decorate her home for the holidays. Thank you Good360 because your holiday gifts gave us the opportunity to spread cheer to the residents of Salem, Oregon!
