As Told to Good360 by United Way of the Dutchess Orange Region

United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region, located in Poughkeepsie, NY, fights for the health, education and financial stability of every person in our community. We want all of our children to be educated and ready to succeed. We want all families to be healthy, financially stable and independent. We want all neighborhoods to be vibrant and safe.

Through United Way of the Dutchess Orange Region’s Gift in Kind Program, we are able to open our basement doors to our community partners in Dutchess and Orange Counties to partake in our Days of Sharing event four times a year. We invite nonprofit representatives, faith-based organizations and schools to come and “shop” for whatever it is that they need to best serve their clients and members. They are given two hours to search through our organized basement filled with donated goods and take what they need for free on a first-come, first-served basis. Our partners come to us with a list in hand of what they need to help their neighbors rebuild their lives, and through our program we are able to provide those necessities. We accumulate these products throughout the year for our Days of Sharing through the generous donations from our local Walmart, Harmon and Bed Bath and Beyond stores through our partnership with Good360, along with other retail partners.

We recently hosted a free community health screening event in honor of Men’s Health Month to bring low-income members of the community together to access free professional health screenings, valuable community resources, a fresh lunch and the chance to get free bicycles. About 200 people attended and because of the relationship we have with Walmart, we were able to give away several bicycles to children and adults. These bikes lifted the spirits of so many people because the ability to own a bike for someone who can’t afford one means a great deal. These people can use their brand-new bikes to get to work or school, to get proper exercise, and to simply have fun. These bikes put the biggest smiles on our attendees faces. Thanks to Good360 and their amazing partners, individuals can finally get to work on time since now I can ride my new bike there every day.
