30 Nov The Power of Collaboration: How Good360 Leverages Trade Associations
To respond adequately to large-scale disasters, cross-sector collaboration is critical. No single entity, the federal government included, can go at it alone.
That’s why, at Good360, we are continually seeking out more ways to partner with effective organizations in both the nonprofit and for-profit worlds. In times of disaster around the globe, we can activate this extensive partner network to get the right products to the right people at the right time.
Recently, we have begun working more closely with major trade associations representing a multitude of industries. We are educating their members about integrating product donations into their corporate philanthropy strategies, and the role that Good360 can play in disaster relief and recovery.
In turn, these associations have raised our visibility among their member groups, resulting in thousands of donated supplies for recent natural disasters, including the devastating hurricanes that swept through the southwestern U.S., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands earlier this year.
Among our association partners is the International Sanitary Supply Association, better known by its acronym, ISSA.
The Illinois-based trade group isn’t known to most people outside of the cleaning industry, despite the fact that it represents some 6,000 companies. But the cleaning products that its members make and distribute can be found in virtually every home in America, and millions more abroad.
With such a large member base, ISSA is an excellent conduit to reach manufacturers who make some of the most critical items necessary to facilitate the mucking and gutting of homes hit by natural disasters. These include industrial-sized quantities of disinfectant, sanitizers, and other cleaning chemicals; cleaning supplies such as brooms, mops, and gloves; and household items such as hand soap and paper towels.
“It’s so much more efficient to leverage ISSA’s vast network rather than reaching out to their members individually,” said Jim Alvey, Good360’s Director of Partnership Development. “With one email, they can reach many more corporate donors than we ever could on our own. In this way, we increase the overall impact we’re making because we’re not spending precious time and energy chasing down every company, and the volume of needed donations we’re able to procure increases by orders of magnitude.”
For example, in the wake of the Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, ISSA sent out a blurb about Good360’s need for product donations to aid in those recovery efforts. The result? More than 30 companies responded and donated $257,000 in needed goods.
“These were all first-time donors who had no prior relationship with us,” Alvey said. “I would venture to say most of these people had never even heard of Good360 until we started working with ISSA.”
The hurricane-related product donations included:
- $71,000 in supplies from Momar, Inc., a family-owned manufacturer of maintenance and specialized cleaning chemicals
- 18 pallets and 10,000 pounds of hand sanitizers, soaps, wipes, floor cleanings, and other supplies from Sheppard Enterprises
- Two pallets worth of spray bottles and latex gloves from Amplex Group Services
These donations are especially helpful for recovery efforts because cleaning supplies tend to be expensive to purchase at retail prices and industrial-sized quantities of cleaning chemicals are hard to obtain, Alvey said.
We have also started a similarly fruitful collaboration with the Solar Energy Industries Association, or SEIA.
SEIA is allowing us access to companies with solar-powered technology, which can be crucially important in disaster zones where the electrical grid is unreliable or has been damaged.
We are currently working to send SEIA-member supplies to hurricane-hit Puerto Rico, including two pallets of solar lights, 200 solar-powered lanterns, 460 water filters, and solar-powered generators and water heaters.
In all, we are looking to pre-stage or ship out more than $2 million in solar products to be used in disaster recovery efforts.
Another trade association, the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), has also helped share messages on thoughtful giving during disasters with its membership base of more than 70 well-known and well-respected retail companies. Between this fall’s hurricane season and the California wildfires, more than 10 RILA members have stepped up with both cash and in-kind commitments like furniture, mattresses, building materials and personal care items in order to support long-term recovery in impacted regions.
Our partnership with the International Housewares Association (IHA) dates back to 2005 when we first collaborated with the trade group to get furnishings and housewares to Hurricane Katrina survivors. Twelve years later, we are once again working with IHA to provide critical supplies in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, Irma, and Maria.

These trade group partnerships show the power of collaboration across the public-private divide, which increase the efficiency and effectiveness of philanthropic efforts for all parties.
