20 Aug Sleep Number Gives Back to Harvey Survivor After Devastation to Family Home
It has been almost a year since Hurricane Harvey drenched southeast Texas with over 20 trillion gallons of rain. While many communities and media outlets are preparing to commemorate the storm with events in late August, many individuals are still dealing with the immediate impact of the storm on their home. Residents outside of Houston’s city limits have been especially impacted. Areas in East Harris County have the distinction of being far enough from the city to receive little to no aid from city services, but close enough to be grouped in with the city of Houston by the larger world.
Natalie Heard is one such survivor. When Hurricane Harvey struck the home, she inherited from her grandmother, three feet of water flooded the entire first floor. The second floor was extensively damaged by water that seeped in through the shingles and into the ceiling and walls. In all, Natalie’s kitchen, bathroom, downstairs flooring and upstairs walls still have enough damage to render the house unlivable. She has been staying with her parents since the storm. As a resident of East Harris County, Natalie fell in between categories of those that received the most focus. Additionally, since Natalie does not fall into one of the commonly protected categories of elderly, veteran or someone with children, her case has largely been ignored or not considered priority by many recovery institutions.
Christian Tabernacle, Natalie’s church, has not ignored her. Natalie, along with hundreds of individuals like her, have been recipients of Sleep Number mattresses Christian Tabernacle received from Good360. As a recipient, Natalie uses this bed regularly during her stay at her parents’ house. When her house is repaired, she will be able to continue using this bed to get a good night’s sleep.
People like Natalie are why Sleep Number has stayed committed to the rebuild process. As someone who would otherwise receive little to no assistance, Natalie at least has a place to rest her head after a stressful day of teaching and trying to find help rebuilding her home. Through partners like Good360 and community groups like Christian Tabernacle, Sleep Number can ensure that their donations go to those individuals and families that need them the most.
