28 Sep Seniors Find Their Inner Beauty Through Clothing Donations
Organization: Topeka LULAC Senior Center
Lives Impacted: 75+
Topeka LULAC Senior Center, located in Kansas, promotes the socialization, independence and mobility of seniors and those with physical limitations in the Topeka metropolitan area. Many of the seniors who come to our Senior Center are on very limited incomes, looking to stretch their monthly budget. We empower our seniors to help rescue them from isolation, and to show them that they can remain independent.
Along with helping keep them independent, we show them how to eat healthy and exercise for healthier bodies. We offer an initiative at the center “Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds, Healthy Lives” which encompasses nutrition, occupational therapy, senior computer classes, and gardening classes. While those aspects are important, feeling your best also includes how you look and for many, what you wear. When we get older it seems fashion is the first to go, so this Francesca’s clothing donation not only brings them style but it also helps stretch their dollars. It allows them to have some nice things they otherwise couldn’t afford, and gives them a more positive outlook on life — if you look nice, you feel better about yourself and that actually can reduce stress and lower blood pressure! Having new clothes, and even a new purse, can change your whole attitude! We received several Francesca’s donation boxes of their items and our senior citizens were delighted with all the household items, new shoes, boots, socks, and clothing items.
One of the ladies in our center, Mary C, actually broke down in tears upon receiving a brand-new pair of boots. With the winter season approaching, she wasn’t sure where she would find shoes in time since she hasn’t had new boots in several years. She cried tears of joy and although the temperature in Kansas right now is102 degrees, she put them on and wore them home! Another one of our seniors, Jean P. suffers from early onset dementia. Thanks to this Francesca’s donation, she was able to get a new wardrobe for the coming season (including jeans that fit her perfectly, new tops, new shoes, socks, and some jewelry). She was so thrilled that she kept showing everyone all of her new things and wanted all to know that “she had been blessed”. Thank you Good360 and Francesca’s for helping those in the community find their self-esteem.
