As Told to Good360 by Holistically Empowered Youth

Holistically Empowered Youth is a nonprofit organization that’s located in Owings Mills, MD and focused on the holistic view of raising children to become self-assured, confident, productive adults with a strong sense of community. We joined the Walmart Retail Distribution Program in August 2018. We are working with eight stores in the Baltimore community, and we receive different benefits from each store. Each store is different in the level of relationship, but they are all personally interested and involved in our mission of supporting the community.

We have received everything from health and hygiene items like toilet paper and paper towels to small electronics and furniture, and everything in between. The most beneficial items have been the health and hygiene and the school supplies since most of our recipients live below the poverty line. We serve families by offering direct and indirect resources to help them to help raise their children while also serving organizations that work in the community. This program has provided access to items needed by residents in the community.  Although we use many of our own resources including gas and vehicle rental, administrative fees, warehouse storage space, volunteer hours, drivers and personal time, we would absolutely renew for another year because the reward is so much greater than the resources we invest.

We have a large population of runaway and homeless children and teens in our area.  The state helps these young adults transition into suitable homes after they have aged out of the shelters, but there are very few shelters available. In one situation I was informed of a young man who had just received the keys to his new apartment but didn’t have anything inside the home. We were able to support him in obtaining his initial items that included a microwave, mattress, small appliances and cookware. This was the first step in building his confidence in handling this newly given responsibility. Thank you Good360 for helping us give back to our community by providing with such a great opportunity to work with Walmart.
