04 Sep National Preparedness Month- Create Your Plan!
When a disaster strikes, every second is crucial. It is essential for families to develop a plan in case of unexpected emergencies. September is National Preparedness Month. The goal is to plan ahead so your family is well prepared in the unfortunate circumstance that a disaster occurs.
The first step in creating your plan is to learn what type of disasters may affect your community. The more informed you are, the better you can be prepared. Then, begin to put together your plan. Don’t know where to start? Ready.gov has created a step by step guide to creating your family’s preparedness plan. Sit down with your family and discuss evacuation routes and emergency alerts. Consider the specific needs of your family. Do individuals in your family have special dietary restrictions or need certain medications? Do you have a pet or service animal? Does anyone have a disability or special medical needs? These are all things to consider when creating your plan. Once you have discussed this with your family, use this form to create your plan. Remember to practice with your family to ensure everything goes smoothly in the case you ever need to use it.
Want to do more? There are tons of ways you can help others prepare for a disaster. Participate in preparedness efforts in your community, teach others about the importance of being prepared, or promote the need for a plan on social media. There are so many opportunities to get the word out!
This September, we encourage all Americans to develop a plan for their family. Do your part to ensure you are ready in case disaster strikes.
