Marshall County Family Resource Network (FRN), located in Moundsville, WV, identifies and addresses service gaps and needs in their local communities, and to seek solutions through collaboration and coordinated efforts in order to improve conditions for children and families. We received a donation of apparel from Good360 and J. Crew that was used to clothe low-income students and adults in Marshall County.
Families in the area often struggle to make ends meet with paying bills and putting food on the table, so items like new clothing can fall by the wayside. In 2019, we debuted our “Mobile Boutique” – a traveling trailer used to distribute goods in the community in places where people are already receiving services.
FRN acts as a facilitator between community members and services and often partners with other non-profit agencies or groups in the community. In partnership with the SPOKES (Strategic Planning in Occupational Knowledge for Employment and Success) Program and Moundsville Middle School, clothing was distributed through a “Mobile Boutique Pop-Up” hosted by the FRN.
The purpose of the Mobile Boutique is two-fold: it reduces transportation barriers (there is extremely limited public transportation in Marshall County), and it allows people to select the items they need and want, rather than assuming what may work for them. Giving with dignity is also an important aspect for our organization, and since clothing is such a personal way to express oneself, we believe people should be able to pick their own items. Many of the ‘shoppers’ in the Mobile Boutique rarely get to pick clothing that is brand-new with tags still attached and have expressed gratitude at the ability to do so.
During the Mobile Boutique at Moundsville Middle School, students were so excited to pick out new clothing. The school operates a clothing closet that receives support from the FRN, but the Mobile Boutique we held was particularly exciting for students. Two students were thrilled to pick out matching J. Crew plaid button down shirts that they wore together the very next day. Students were ‘oohing’ and ‘ahhing’ over all the options they had to choose from and were visibly excited to pick out items that had never been worn before.
Thank you to Good360 and J. Crew for providing new clothing and a sense of dignity to people who otherwise wouldn’t have new, high-quality apparel.
