06 Feb Mattress Donation Helps Disabled Teen Get A Good Night’s Rest
Organization: The Luke Commission
Lives Impacted: 100
The Luke Commission has come into its own in Swaziland, South Africa, recognized as a leading mobile medical team for the government and its communities. Swazis who live in remote areas are the poor, the elderly, the children, and the ill. Often those who are sickest return to their rural homesteads to seek final care from relatives. Most of the mobile hospital sites are set up in outermost parts of this small country, whose population is fighting for its very existence. HIV/AIDS has taken the lives of countless Swazis and left one-fifth of the children as orphans. Delaying orphanhood has become one of the main aims of The Luke Commission.
Thanks to this donation from Tempur-Pedic, this new mattress helped Mmeni, a 19-year-old young boy, who had nowhere to sleep. His body is disabled in every way, and every movement brings him pain and grief. Despite his trials, his mind, heart, and soul brim over with thankfulness and joy. He makes us laugh, and laughter is a way to get through the rough times these children and families face throughout the community.
We came to deliver Mmeni a brand-new mattress for his bed and he could not believe it. Due to his disability, the bed had to be remodeled in order for the mattress to sit low enough so Mmeni could back into it and roll over. Even with all of these issues, he was still so happy and grateful for this mattress and before long, everyone joined in with merriment. Mmeni mentioned, “this is nothing like my other mattress, this one is very comfortable”. We were so happy to be able to bless him with this mattress, since his disability imposes on his joy for life. Thank you Good360 and Tempur-Pedic for helping us bring joy to this community and restoring faith in Mmeni’s life.
