16 Mar Lunch For Hundreds Thanks To Walmart Donation
DONATION: WALMART ASSORTED ITEMS
LIVES IMPACTED: 500
United Way of the Plains, in Wichita KS, brings the community together to focus on the building blocks of a better life for all:
- Education (helping children and youth achieve their potential)
- Income (promoting financial stability and independence)
- Health (improving people’s well-being and health)
United Way raises funds, works with coalitions, writes grants, recruits volunteers and distributes in-kind gifts. At United Way of the Plains, we operate the Give Items of Value (GIV) warehouse. It’s been one of our programs since we started in 1985. As a Good360 Community Redistribution Partner (CRP), we store many donations in our warehouse and then distribute them to nonprofits locally. One of our most constant and largest donations has been truckloads from Walmart. Anything and everything can be found on these truckloads, so they are great for the needs of our diverse community.
We used some of the items from the truckload, such as lunch sacks, zip lock bags, napkins, spoons, and gloves, when we recently made lunch for homeless individuals in our community. We bought bread, peanut butter, pudding cups, pretzels and cookies and used the items from Walmart to assemble and serve the sandwiches! We were able to purchase more food than usual because of the cost savings of the Walmart donation. When you can get 500 lunch sacks, 500 sandwich size zip lock bags, 1,000 snack size zip lock bags, 500 spoons and 500 napkins for free, that results in more food for hungry individuals.
In addition to the fact that we saved money, we were also able ensure that we were safely preparing the lunches with gloves and plastic utensils. When you can provide an agency with 500 sack lunches for their homeless clients, you are providing a meal to someone who might otherwise go without food for the day. One of our Food Preparedness Coordinators said, “Hundreds of lunches for us to share with our clients? Wow, we’re so grateful that people we don’t know care so much about us.” Thank you so much Walmart and Good360!
