Delaware Center for Homeless Veterans, Inc., located in Wilmington, DE, provides housing and supportive services to veterans in the community. Our housing goal is to provide safe, affordable housing coupled with supportive services for each veteran in need. Our supportive services goal is to empower homeless veterans and their families who are at risk of homelessness, while simultaneously strengthening the impact of other community-based organizations. By providing housing, supportive services, and ending the cycle of homelessness for veterans, we are able to fully support their long-term goals of obtaining recovery, economic self-sufficiency, independence, and community reintegration.
Our veterans were formerly homeless and most live below the poverty level. While having a roof over their heads is a priority, they are living without the basics like beds, furniture, and dishes. These donations have been the first pieces of quality furniture many have been able to obtain. The donations have noticeably bolstered many spirits. One of our residents, a middle-aged homeless man, lived on and off the streets for the past couple of years. His issues began when his wife of many years divorced him and he lost his possessions, such as their living room furniture. A favorite piece was his recliner, which years ago was his first major purchase that he paid for himself when he worked steadily.
When we opened the door to our conference room where we store the La-Z-Boy recliners, he immediately headed to a brown recliner that he says is identical to his old one. Since receiving his recliner, his outlook and personality have been a great shining light at the Pearl Center, our new 51-unit apartment building we opened specifically for homeless and very low-income veterans and their families. So much so, he has become one of our most active volunteers. Thank you, La-Z-Boy and Good360 for helping make this veteran feel complete again.
