Laurel Hill Center works with individuals who are battling severe and persistent mental illness as well as homelessness. The individuals who received the Think Geek clothing items that were donated through Good360 have lost faith in the community and the programs available to assist them. Our agency has a team of case managers that locate these individuals and make connections, try to build a rapport and regain their trust so that we can assist them in finding housing or services that will meet their needs. With this outreach, we supply the people in need with clothing and other items that they not only need to survive but also to regain some dignity.
The donations that we receive help to build relationships with those facing homelessness. Once we rebuild that bridge of trust by supplying items for their basic needs (food, clothing, and hygiene), we can help to find the services that secure housing. Simply supplying these individuals with this new clothing from Think Geek helps them to feel as if someone actually cares and it helps to restore dignity that many of them lost long ago.
One specific case of an individual who had been homeless for a few years and was in and out of jail and the emergency room due to his mental health symptoms being untreated. Our team was able to meet with him and build a trusting relationship with him by supplying items for his basic needs, including clothing from Think Geek. He is now regularly working with case managers, counselors, medication management providers and supported employment specialists. He has been able to move into housing and has begun to look for competitive employment in our community.
Thank you to Good360 and Think Geek for providing clothes and dignity for the homeless.
