Helping Survivors Find Their Strength Through Cosmetics Donation

Organization: Alternatives Incorporated

As Told to Good360 by Alternatives Incorporated

Alternatives Incorporated, located in Anderson, Indiana, strives to eradicate domestic and sexual violence through education, prevention, and intervention for survivors of abuse. Our philosophy stems from the belief that everyone has the right to live in a loving, caring, safe and secure environment. We support those suffering from abuse through the initial crisis with strategies and programs that will help them achieve abuse-free and financially independent lives. In recognition of the complex needs, we draw upon the resources of local communities to support survivors in their quest for peace and security.

Our agency works diligently to reverse the damage that comes from verbal and emotional abuse. These lies and hurtful words can break whatever self-esteem these survivors have developed, making them vulnerable to an unstable home. We strive to empower them to find their inner strength and beauty, and this donation of lip products helps make this possible. Putting on lip balm can help spark joy and confidence in a survivor. It may not seem like much, but the effects can be magnificent! For some of our survivors it may be the first time in a long time that they do something for themselves. It may be the first time they take a step towards feeling beautiful again and recognizing their own value. This donation will help empower each survivor we serve in our emergency shelter program and strengthen our work to reduce violence in our community.

Coming to an emergency shelter while fleeing a violent home is a very stressful experience.  We were able to provide needed lip products to our emergency shelter residents daily. The lip products are given to our residents in their welcome bag upon arrival to the housing facility.  The majority of our residents leave with very few personal belongings and rarely do they have the “small” things like a notebook, planner, lip balm, etc.  While these are small in the greater picture of essential needs, they are vital in helping a survivor rebuild their life and begin a peaceful future. The lip balm can be the smallest item that a survivor needs to feel confident enough about herself to take on the next step towards her bigger dreams. Thank you Good360 for helping us impact over 150 lives.
