04 Jan Giving Survivors Shelter and Comfort with Bed Bath & Beyond Donation
Organization: MercyHouse Organization
Lives Impacted: 20
Donation: Bed, Bath & Beyond
MercyHouse Organization, is a nonprofit organization located in The Woodlands, TX shelters survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and abuse together with their pets. We provide emotional support, counseling, legal aid, food and shelter along with a holistic health and wellness program aimed towards healing and recovery. Recipients are given items they need through donations from the community.
These donations from Bed Bath & Beyond helped and empowered our organization to be able to help more women with pets and children of all ages. The humidifier enabled us to treat the house and provide a safe place for little babies from 0 to 2 years old. The towels that were donated allowed our homeless residents to each have their own towel, which also cut down on the possibility of collecting mold from multiple uses. Our clients are survivors, and sometimes while fleeing their perpetrator or abuser, they leave behind their personal belongings. These donations provide comfort and the feeling of living in a happy clean home. Every donation that we received means a lot to the clients that we serve. They came in broken-hearted and bruised.
When Janie found MercyHouse, she had been living in her car with her dog, Millie. Janie had escaped her violently abusive husband with only what she could carry. She contacted domestic violence shelters in the Houston area, but none of those would allow her to bring her beloved pet companion into the shelter with her. Janie was not going to leave Millie behind with the abuser, nor was she going to give up the only emotional support she had. She and Millie had been through a lot of physical and emotional abuse. Janie used the donated Tupperware as a bowl for her pup and the towels were used immediately to wrap around her little dog from the wet weather, keeping her warm as they settled down to their new room.
This donation impacted Janie in the most positive way because for the first time in a long time, she was able to get clean soft towels, take a warm bath and have a soft comforter to keep her warm. She also left the shelter with these items, which meant she could focus her income on other items. Thank you Good360 and Bed Bath & beyond for providing comfort and love to survivors that have lost hope.
