13 Jul Donation Helps Support Hundreds of Women Battling Breast Cancer
Organization: The United Breast Cancer Foundation
Lives Impacted: 50+
The United Breast Cancer Foundation (UBCF) works with strong and beautiful women every day who are literally fighting for their lives. While we wish we could fight the battle for them, we can minimize their financial burden and bring them joy during these difficult times. Thanks to our partnership with J.Jill and Good360, we are doing just that. Seeing UBCF clients leave with tears of joy because they received brand-new fashion wear from brands like J.Jill is very rewarding. Breast cancer isn’t just a terrible and painful disease, it’s also an expensive one. Each appointment, test, scan, round of chemo, radiation and surgery can cost thousands of dollars. For a fortunate few, insurance covers most of the expenses, but it is very rare that insurance covers the entire cost. UBCF offers 7 unique programs dedicated to helping women, men and their families directly impacted by breast cancer. UBCF’s Gifts In Kind (GIK) Program (part of our Community Service Program) provides breast cancer patients and survivors with free items such as on-trend clothing, personal care products, bedding, small household appliances, baby items, and so much more.
One client that has recently benefitted from UBCF’s GIK Program is Ms. Lekisha, a single mother of two boys. In 2015, at the young age of 37, while raising her sons and working as a receptionist at a cardiologist’s office, Lekisha was diagnosed with breast cancer. She completed her treatments and received the news that she was considered to be “without evidence of disease”. However, she had a re-occurrence a few years later. Lekisha completed her latest treatment in March 2018 and is once again considered to be in remission. Throughout her journey, Lekisha has had a lumpectomy, a double mastectomy and had both of her ovaries removed – none of which you would guess when meeting her because she is such a joyful and positive person. Lekisha shared, “Staying positive is most important in getting through this illness,” and it is very clear when meeting her that she practices what she preaches. She found a bedazzled orange maxi dress she loved and “a lot of cute stuff to wear to work.” Lekisha has said that donations like these have helped her to “become less stressed and move forward in getting healthy and focusing on my health.” So not only has this J.Jill donation brought some extra happiness into her life, but it will hopefully also help with Lekisha’s healing process!
Every employee at UBCF is proud to help those who have struggled due to breast cancer. There is no greater reward for all of the hard work we do than the look of pure joy on a client’s face when they receive items they never would have been able to afford on their own. Thanks to companies like J.Jill and Good360, UBCF’s Gifts In Kind Program is thriving and reaching hundreds of women, men and children in need. The partnership between the United Breast Cancer Foundation, J.Jill and Good360 is changing lives for the better and is something we are truly proud of.
