26 Feb Bed Bath & Beyond Contributes to “Day of Sharing”
DONATION: BED BATH & BEYOND HOME GOODS
LIVES IMPACTED: 3,189
United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region hosts a quarterly Day of Sharing event in the basement of our Poughkeepsie, NY office. Day of Sharing is when we invite nonprofit representatives, faith-based organizations, and schools to come and “shop” at our free store. Through Good360, we have received an amazing amount of donations from Bed Bath & Beyond, such as curtains, pillow covers, furniture covers, table cloths, garbage cans, bed sheets, bathroom accessories, towels, mattress pads, comforters, and wheelchairs.
The home goods are particularly popular with homeless shelters and food pantries, which are supplied to their low-income and disadvantaged clients. Representatives come with a list of items in mind needed to best serve the clients of their organization. They are given two hours to shop, and all items are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. The bed-in-a-bag sets are typically the most popular, as well as the towels and shower accessories. These are basic items that most people take for granted and forget are essential for everyday living. These donations help people start fresh in a new living situation, which will assist them in their efforts to better their lives. Additionally, having the necessary furnishings allows for a comfortable, warm living space where the client can come home and relax in.
A nonprofit representative attended Day of Sharing to collect items for a new client of her organization. The client, a young woman, was fleeing from a domestic violence situation and was starting fresh in an unfurnished apartment. She needed bedding, curtains, bathroom accessories and blankets. Unfortunately, she did not have the financial resources to purchase these essential items herself. Through the assistance of this organization, and the generosity of Bed Bath & Beyond, this woman was able to procure the items needed to live comfortably in her new home. Another story came from a nonprofit representative who attended Days of Sharing. She was in need of a mattress pad to help a mother and child sleep comfortably at night. They were sleeping on a thin, worn-out futon and could not afford a new mattress. Through United Way’s partnership with Bed Bath & Beyond, we were able to provide a thick, brand new mattress pad that would allow them to get a healthy amount of sleep each night.
This donation has been life-changing for so many! It has made such a difference and we are so thankful for it. Thank you to Good360 and Bed Bath & Beyond!
