AARP Donates $1 Million to Flood Relief in Louisiana

After the record flooding in Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas of Louisiana over the summer of 2016, communities were left decimated. Ongoing rebuilding efforts and corporate relief are still needed in a state that has been left to start from scratch. To assist with ongoing rebuilding and construction efforts, AARP Foundation recently announced a new donation in the sum of $1 million for these projects, according to BRProud.com.

When the efforts first began in August, AARP Foundation started a relief fund to help the victims of the flooding, especially seniors who had little means to rebuild. AARP matched each donation to the dollar, quickly amassing Louisiana flood donations totaling $1 million. The AARP donation announcement was made outside the home of a senior in the area whose home is currently being rebuilt by Rebuilding Together Baton Rouge. Governor John Bel Edwards spoke with citizens during the event to hear about their situation firsthand.

The donation is not going to one central nonprofit, but is instead being split between 16 separate organizations. These nonprofits include Habitat for Humanity of Louisiana, Salvation Army of Greater Baton Rouge, Rebuilding Together Baton Rouge, Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, and Council on Aging-Livingston. While this large donation by AARP Foundation is commendable, splitting funds between so many organizations, and simply donating directly, makes impact and effectiveness of the donations themselves harder to gauge.

One terrific alternative to help communities rebuild in the wake of a natural disaster like the Louisiana flooding is through direct product donation.
