Good360 to Make Disaster Relief Efforts More Sustainable, Efficient, Effective with Help of Verizon

According to the National Science Foundation, at least 60 percent of goods donated during disasters end up in landfills.

It is that statistic that helps drive Good360’s Disaster Recovery360 platform, an online portal that will make disaster relief more sustainable and more efficient. With millions of people affected by natural disasters each year, Disaster Recover360 will be a powerful tool in the long-term recovery process.

And Verizon agrees. The company recently announced that Disaster Recovery360 is a winner in the Verizon Powerful Answers Award sustainability category, a prize worth up to $1 million.

When a disaster first strikes, many well-intentioned companies and individuals try to help by sending goods. The majority of donations for disaster relief arrive in the first six weeks of a disaster, and they are often items that are not needed at the time or not the right type of product. Though well-intentioned, these donations flood disaster-struck areas and can hinder recovery.

“People want to help, but they don’t always know how or when or what to do,” says Cindy Hallberlin, president and CEO of Good360. “Through Disaster Recovery360, we will build an online platform that will unite all parties involved—corporations who have products to give, nonprofits working on the ground, and individuals who want to help but don’t know how. And most importantly, we will be able to assess the needs throughout all stages of recovery to help prevent donations ending up in landfills or going unused, simply because they were delivered at the wrong time.”

The portal will be powered by Verizon technology and backed by the 30-year legacy and network built by Good360.

“We’ve been helping companies be environmentally responsible with product donations for the last three decades, and are now taking it to the disaster space,” says Hallberlin.

Good360 has helped with disasters such as September 11, 2001, Hurricane Katrina, Superstorm Sandy and the tornadoes in Moore, Oklahoma. Disaster Recovery360 will allow Good360 to do even more in the disaster recovery area and engage its partners much longer in the recovery process.

The portal will solve a critical problem in the disaster space and provide a sustainable solution for the environment and for communities. Though for many disasters, recovery is a long process—sometimes lasting years—media and public attention for a disaster is unfortunately often shorter than that, leaving some communities forgotten before they fully rebuild.

With Disaster Recovery360, both short and long-term needs will be tracked and met—from initial emergency supplies such as personal hygiene kits and clothing to long-term rebuilding tools such as building materials, cleaning tools and technology. The portal will ensure that the right types of goods—as designated by nonprofits working directly with the communities on the ground—are distributed when and where they are most needed.
