Donation of Backpacks Meets Students’ Back to School Needs

  • East Harris County Recovery Project
  • East Harris County, Texas
  • Donation: Backpacks
  • Lives Impacted: 2500 students and families

Hurricane Harvey struck Texas over two years ago, and many communities continue to feel its effects today. The areas that were impacted most by Harvey were already facing many economic challenges. After Harvey hit, the people who were struggling to meet their basic needs were faced with having to rebuild their lives and their homes as well. In response to Harvey and the affected communities, the East Harris County Recovery Project was created to help individuals and families that were hit particularly hard by the hurricane and support them as they recover. Good360 is proud to partner with this organization in an effort to assist the impacted communities.

Good360 donated backpacks to East Harris County Empowerment Council for students returning to school this fall who otherwise would not have been able to purchase new backpacks. The weeks leading up to the start of school are particularly hard for families. Parents are often forced to choose between having food on the dinner table, putting gas in the car, and purchasing school supplies for their children. The donation of backpacks allowed them to focus on meeting other needs.

One family in East Harris County was especially impacted by this donation. When it came time to buy back to school items, the mother was concerned that she would not have enough money to purchase everything for her two children, one in third grade and one in fifth. Thanks to Good360’s donation, both children received brand new backpacks. Their mother said they had been using the same backpacks for years and they were thrilled to receive the new ones. Not only were they given backpacks, but the backpacks were filled with school supplies for the upcoming school year. This is just one example of the 2500 students and their families at 12 elementary schools in East Harris County who were impacted by this donation.

Good360 understands that recovery goes well beyond the initial response to disaster. We are committed to continuing to partner with organizations like East Harris County Empowerment Council who approach disaster recovery as a long-term process.
