Diapers, Drywall and Other Donations Help Families Live the American Dream

Disposable diapers can be a huge burden on a family’s budget. That’s why our community managers were thrilled to distribute diapers from Good360 to 45 low-income families. They weren’t just keeping babies comfortable. They were giving moms and dads the comfort of using the money they saved for other necessities like food, clothing and shoes.

At the Orange, Calif.-based Affordable Community Living Corporation (ACL), we know every dollar counts. That’s why we take steps big and small to help families with low and moderate incomes feel healthy and safe in quality housing they can afford. We don’t just create a buying opportunity, a toehold in Southern California home ownership. We create a living opportunity, where neighbors look out for each other.

There are potlucks, “Boxes of Love” with food for the holidays and neighbor-to-neighbor collections for families who need it most. One great example of our culture of caring arrives by the truckload every month thanks to Good360’s Retail Donation Partnership program. Through this program we are partnered with four neighborhood Home Depot stores.

The steady stream of donated drywall, sinks, cabinets and other building materials provided through these local partnerships helps us refurbish manufactured homes and pass that savings on to future homeowners. But that’s not all. Veterans in our communities, so tightly knit that they have their own nonprofit organization, use the building materials plus their ingenuity, skills and muscle to help disabled vets modify their homes using these Home Depot donations. Each time another house is refurbished, it adds to the pride of ownership for the whole community. Both Home Depot and diaper donations are helping ACL take the stress out of homeownership–and whether you’re a baby, a big person or someone in between, comfort is what makes a house a home.
