Good360 On the Ground: Helping Nonprofits and Corporations Develop Effective Disaster Response Strategies

Good360 is taking active measures to ensure our nonprofit and corporate partners are ready for when a disaster strikes. Most recently, Good360 launched a Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Commitment to Action called “Optimizing Corporate Disaster Giving and Engagement.” CGI, an initiative of the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation, convenes global leaders to create and implement innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges. Good360 announced its commitment to spearheading an actionable mission around thoughtful giving during disasters by educating responsible business leaders at a number of Fortune 500 companies on adopting a proactive, needs-based, resilient, transparent and long-term approach to disaster giving. Along with Good360’s launch of the Resilient Response pledge, there are now multiple ways in which corporations and nonprofits can engage with Good360 to create new and innovative ways to respond to disasters. One of the most important phases of disaster is the Preparation phase. It is important for both Corporation and Nonprofits to have a response plan in place prior to when a disaster strikes. As a leader in product philanthropy during a disaster, Good360 has several recommendations for corporations and nonprofits in regards to the response strategies.

Corporations: The first priority for a company is to determine how their employees were impacted and how they want or expect their company to respond. They will look to their companies for the best way for them to engage and it is better to already have a plan ready for when this happens. Good360 has developed several strategies for companies that are seeking to develop a response plan from giving cash, product and employee volunteerism. We have also partnered with All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response to launch Resilient Response, a campaign focused around promoting best practices in preparing and responding to disasters to ultimately speed up recovery and build even more resilient communities.

Nonprofits: Whether a nonprofit includes disaster relief in their mission or not, if they are located in a disaster vulnerable region it is important to have a disaster relief plan. The Voluntary Organization Active in Disaster (VOAD) is a national organization of nonprofits that have experience and a wealth of knowledge regarding the disaster space. Every state in the US has their own VOAD chapter that meets daily to exchange needs and update each other on current relief efforts. Good360 suggests that all nonprofits reach out to their state VOAD chapter to see how you can collaborate with the nonprofits who already have resources and understand the best practices to use when responding to a disaster. Good360 has been working with our partners to develop better planning strategies so that nonprofits are better equipped to respond to the best of their abilities. Shari Rudolph is Chief Marketing Officer of Good360 and is an accomplished retail, digital commerce and media executive with a strong track record of building audience, revenue and brands. Shari’s previous experience includes management consulting as well as various executive and leadership roles at both start-ups and large media and retail e-commerce companies in Southern California, New York and Silicon Valley. She is also an adjunct professor teaching classes in marketing, advertising and entrepreneurial studies and she earned her MBA from The Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA.
